Traducir letras de canciones para cantarlas

Algo que jamás pensé que fuera a hacer era traducir una canción de manera profesional en la carrera, aunque tampoco creo que haga algo semejante en el mundo laboral a corto plazo. Lo que sí es cierto es que traducir canciones huyendo de la literalidad es un gran ejercicio de creatividad, especialmente si se dan las condiciones que describo a continuación.
El encargo que propuso a nuestra clase el profesor de traducción literaria y divulgativa fue traducir entre todos las letras del musical de Cabaret… para cantarlas. Por tanto, no bastaba traducir el significado del mensaje original, sino que había que jugar con el lenguaje para que el ritmo original de la canción no se viera alterado, algo más difícil de lo que parece sobre todo si no se cuenta con un buen oído —ejem—.
Como algunos habréis imaginado, traducir letras para cantar es otro ejemplo de traducción subordinada. De hecho, creo que es uno de los casos de este tipo de traducción más difíciles de resolver en el menor tiempo posible (léase como productividad para los empresarios).
Al tener que ajustar la traducción al ritmo de la música, no hay más remedio que traducir escuchando la letra original, medir los golpes de voz de la línea que se traduce y hacer una propuesta de traducción que intente reflejar en la medida de lo posible el significado del original a la vez que suene bien al oído.
¿Y cómo sabemos si nuestra traducción encaja con el ritmo original? Nada más sencillo y complejo a la par como cantar nosotros mismos nuestra creación. Si se tiene buen oído ya tenemos bastante recorrido; de lo contrario, tendremos que esforzarnos más y repetir varias veces hasta quedar satisfechos, no sin antes preguntarle a otra persona (con conocimientos sobre música a ser posible) qué le parece.
Si os digo la verdad, yo, que soy un negado para la música, disfruté como un niño traduciendo las letras de Cabaret de Mein Herr, Perfectly Marvellous y What Would You Do. Al principio, con Mein Herr, me costaba un montón y no podía presumir precisamente de haber realizado una gran traducción, pero con el apoyo del profesor y mucha dedicación creé algo medio digerible. Una recomendación vital que aprendí fue utilizar y conectar dos palabras que terminen y empiecen por vocal, pues luego es mucho más fácil cantar sin ir a tropezones.
Sin duda alguna, la canción con la que más contento me quedé fue Perfectly Marvellous, porque es bastante rapidita y creo que supe encajar bastante bien todos los ritmos. Y de verdad, es genial cantar de carrerilla una canción que, en cierto modo, ¡has creado tú! A pesar de que ya tenía una versión más o menos definitiva, todos los días ensayaba la canción y siempre modificaba algo.
El aliciente de traducir What Would You Do fue que, conforme traducía, pedía consejo a un amigo aficionado a cantar y con ciertos conocimientos de voz. Fue entonces cuando comprobé por qué es fundamental tener cierto don para la música para traducir canciones, pues era genial decirle «esta frase quiere decir esto» y tras dos segundos hallar una solución que encajara con el ritmo de la música y fuera fiel al original. En definitiva, un rato de diversión y aprendizaje cien por cien.
A pesar de que hay muchas páginas dedicadas a la traducción de letras de canciones como Letras de canciones traducidas o letrastraducidas.com, os animo a que si tenéis una canción especial o varias en una lengua extranjera que dominéis, hagáis la prueba. Incluso podéis mejorar las versiones de Grease o El Fantasma de la Ópera si no os gusta la traducción que hay ya. ¡Quién sabe si descubrís tener un don para esto!
Yo, de momento, os dejo con mi traducción de Perfectly Marvellous; eso sí, hay que escuchar la canción para que tenga gracia.
